Career choice is primarily influenced by living costs, but it is also shaped by personal interests and inclinations. How does Gen Z approach career selection, and what new characteristics are they bringing to the workforce?

Skai.gr went out onto the streets of Athens to ask young members of Gen Z if they are satisfied with their current careers. The answers vary. Some consider working abroad, even though they feel they made the right career choice. Others feel fortunate that their parents respected their interest in music, which is often seen as a non-lucrative field. Meanwhile, some do not find motivation in their jobs and had to study in different fields to discover what they truly want to pursue.

Gen Z includes those born between 1997 and 2013. According to research by the University of California, Berkeley, and Holly Schroth, this generation is more focused on achieving significant milestones through their careers. While Gen Z enjoys higher financial stability and education levels compared to previous generations, they also report higher rates of anxiety and depression. About 25% of Gen Zers claim they cannot manage their stress, while 50% report being able to handle it effectively.

The study also highlights that Gen Z grew up in comparatively affluent environments. In 1979, 60% of teenagers were employed, whereas in 2015, only 34% worked, and this number is expected to drop to 25% by 2024. This means that when they enter their first job, they often have little prior work experience, resulting in idealized expectations of the workforce. Additionally, the top expectations Gen Zers have from their employers are positive behavior (42%) and clear goal-setting (37%), while Millennials emphasized open communication and feedback (42%), followed by clear objectives (38%). Gen Z also strongly values social justice, with 91% globally believing in equality for all people.

Salary remains a fundamental requirement for Gen Z. The 2010 financial crisis, climate change, ongoing wars, and rapid technological advances are major factors that have shaped this generation. The significant integration of technology into everyday life and its impact on careers is a particular concern for them. Additionally, rising inflation is pushing living costs higher. In Greece, the Consumer Price Index, according to ELSTAT, rose by 2.4% in October 2024 compared to October 2023, which had already seen a 3.4% increase compared to October 2022.

Gen Z Characteristics in the Greek Workforce

According to research by Evalion-SHL, a human capital consulting firm, among 2,100 Greek Gen Z participants, the generation’s key strengths are taking responsibility for challenging tasks, adapting easily to change, and ensuring high-quality results.

Speaking to Skai.gr, Orfeas Stavrou, co-author of the study and Managing Partner of Evalion-SHL Greece & Cyprus, stated: “The Greek financial crisis, combined with the COVID-19 pandemic, has shaped the ability of Greek graduates to navigate economic instability and rapid change. They have developed strong adaptability and resilience skills, which are essential to thrive amid dual crises. From layoffs to transitions to remote work, they have shown resilience in the face of unexpected change, acquiring the necessary skills to succeed in unstable environments and post-pandemic challenges.”

Regarding areas for improvement, the research found that Greek Gen Zers struggle with tasks requiring analytical and critical thinking, and efforts to build strong relationships with colleagues and teams are not a priority. Commenting on these findings, Orfeas Stavrou explained:
“Skills related to maintaining positive work relationships and fostering team cohesion appear to be weak among Greek graduates due to cultural and educational norms that emphasize individual achievement over collaboration. Similarly, the low analytical thinking observed may result from an educational system that prioritizes memorization over critical thinking and practical application. The research indicates that organizations should assign Gen Zers challenging tasks that allow them to demonstrate their skills while also providing opportunities to develop critical thinking and constructive collaboration with others.”

It is noteworthy that by 2025, Gen Z will make up a quarter of the Greek workforce. Their needs, strengths, and areas for improvement will play a significant role in shaping the future of the labor market.

Source: skai.gr

A profession may not be an end in itself, but it is undeniably a significant part of a person’s life, occupying a large portion of their daily routine.
